The author defines a finiteness condition, called \textit{tameness}, for modules over posets (or equivalently, vector-space-valued sheaves on posets) and proves a syzygy theorem giving many properties equivalent to tameness, including conditions of finite presentation and finite resolution. The theorem shows that modules over posets are analogous in many ways to multigraded modules over polynomial rings, but with weaker hypotheses and with poset-theoretic conclusions. This result should allow for a theory of commutative and homological algebra of modules over arbitrary posets. Tameness can be thought of as a generalization of the Noetherian condition and is even potentially useful as such over the poset \(\mathbb{Z}^n\), corresponding to combinatorial commutative algebra of polynomial rings. Data structures for tame modules are introduced which yield topologically interpretable structures in persistent homology.
