Homotopy groups of the spaces of self-maps of Lie groups

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We compute the homotopy groups of the spaces of self maps of Lie groups of rank 2, SU(3), Sp(2), and G_2. We use the cell structures of these Lie groups and the standard methods of homotopy theory.

For a pointed space \(X\), let \(\text{map}_*(X,X)\) denote the path component of the trivial map of the space of self pointed maps on \(X\). In this paper, the authors study the homotopy groups of the space \(\text{map}_*(X,X)\) when \(X\) is an \(H\)-space. In particular, they compute the lower homotopy groups of \(\text{map}_*(X,X)\) explicitly for \(X=SU(3)\), \(Sp(2)\) or \(G_2\). Their method of computation is based on classical homotopy theory and they compute \(\pi_*(\text{map}_*(X,X))\) by using the cellular structure of Lie groups of rank 2 and the composition method due to Toda and Mimura.
