Let U be an open set in \({\mathbb{R}}^ d\) and I be an open interval containing the origin and let \(\Omega =I\times U\), \(D=(D_ 0,D')=(D_ 0,D_ 1,...,D_ d)\), \(D_ j=-i\partial /\partial x_ j\). Let \(P(x,D)=D_ 0^ m+\sum_{1\leq j\leq m}A_ j(x,D')D_ 0^{m-j}\) be a differential operator in \(D_ 0\) with coefficients \(A_ j(x,D')\) which are classical pseudodifferential operators of order j. Let p(x,\(\xi\)) be the principal symbol of P; p(x,\(\xi\)) is hyperbolic with respect to \(dx_ 0\). The author studies the microlocal and local Cauchy problem for P(x,D) with data on \(x_ 0=0.\) The author proves an existence theorem for the parametrix of P with finite propagation speed of wave front sets and a local solvability theorem in \(C^{\infty}\) for the Cauchy problem considered
