Hypercomplex structures on special linear groups

From MaRDI portal

The paper studies left-invariant hypercomplex structures on real and complex special linear groups, with particular emphasis on \(SL(3,\mathbb R)\) and \(SL(2n+1,\mathbb C)\).\N\NA first main result is the non-existence of left-invariant hypercomplex structures on \(SL(3,\mathbb R)\). In order to prove this, the authors revisit Sasaki's classification of left-invariant complex structures on this group. They identify and correct some inaccuracies in the original classification; in particular, two complex structures previously regarded as inequivalent are shown to be equivalent. The resulting corrected classification reduces the possible complex structures to a one-parameter family together with one isolated equivalence class. A detailed analysis of the integrability and anticommutation conditions for a second complex structure then yields the announced non-existence result. The authors also observe that, although no left-invariant hypercomplex structure exists on \(SL(3,\mathbb R)\), the groups \(SL(2n+1,\mathbb R)\) do admit non-left-invariant hypercomplex structures.\N\NThe second part of the paper concerns \(SL(2n+1,\mathbb C)\). Starting from a complex product structure on \(\mathfrak{sl}(2n+1,\mathbb R)\), the authors obtain a left-invariant hypercomplex structure on its complexification. The existence of hypercomplex structures on these complex special linear groups was previously known, but the present construction is particularly suited to the subsequent geometric analysis. It is shown that the resulting hypercomplex structure admits no compatible left-invariant HKT metric.\N\NThe most substantial part of the paper is devoted to the Obata connection. The authors first establish general relations between the holonomy of the canonical connection associated with a complex product structure and the Obata holonomy of the induced hypercomplex structure on the complexification. They then compute explicitly the Obata holonomy for the hypercomplex structures constructed on \(SL(2n+1,\mathbb C)\). The resulting holonomy group is a proper subgroup of the corresponding quaternionic general linear group, but is not contained in the quaternionic special linear group. This provides a new explicit example of Obata holonomy of a type not commonly represented in the existing literature.\N\NThus, besides correcting a previous classification result, the paper gives a new non-existence theorem for \(SL(3,\mathbb R)\) and a detailed computation of a non-standard Obata holonomy for a natural family of hypercomplex Lie groups.
