Independence and strong independence complexes of finite groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a finite group. The paper considers two simplicial complexes on the vertex set \(G\) defined by \textit{P. J. Cameron} [Open Math. 23, Article ID 20250171, 7 p. (2025; Zbl 1573.05402)]: the independence complex \(\Sigma(G)\) and its subcomplex \(\widetilde{\Sigma}(G)\), whose simplices are the strongly independent subsets of \(G\).\N\NOne of the main results characterizes the finite groups whose independence complex is isomorphic to that of a finite abelian group: there exists a finite abelian group \(G_1\) such that \(\Sigma(G_1)\cong\Sigma(G_2)\) if and only if \(G_2\) is nilpotent and its Sylow subgroups are modular and non-Hamiltonian. Equivalently, the subgroup lattices of \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) are related by an index-preserving isomorphism. For strong independence complexes, the paper proves that if \(G_1\) is abelian and \(\widetilde{\Sigma}(G_1)\cong\widetilde{\Sigma}(G_2)\), then the subgroup lattices of \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) are isomorphic.\N\NThe authors also classify the finite groups for which \(\Sigma(G)=\widetilde{\Sigma}(G)\). In the nilpotent case, this is expressed in terms of monotone \(p\)-groups, namely finite \(p\)-groups such that \(K\leq H\leq G\) implies \(d(K)\leq d(H)\). In the non-nilpotent case, equality holds if and only if \(G=PQ\) is a Frobenius group, where \(P\) is a normal abelian \(p\)-subgroup and \(Q\) is a cyclic \(q\)-subgroup.
