Infinite metacyclic subgroups of the mapping class group

From MaRDI portal

Let \(\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)\) denote the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface \(S_g\) of genus \(g\). In the paper under review, the authors study infinite metacyclic subgroups of \(\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)\). The main result of the paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions under which two maps \(F,G\in \mathrm{Mod}(S_g)\) generate an infinite metacyclic group, where \(F\trianglelefteq \langle F, G\rangle\). The authors provide several interesting applications of the main theorem, answering the following questions:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[1.] Are there ample examples of infinite metacyclic groups in \(\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)\)?\N\item[2.] Under what conditions does a pseudo-Anosov map form an infinite metacyclic group with a periodic map?\N\item[3.] Does there exist an infinite metacyclic group in level-\(m\) subgroup \(\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)[m]\)?\N\item[4.] Can we give a bound on the order of a periodic element that forms an infinite metacyclic group with a pseudo-Anosov map?\N\item[5.] Can a pseudo-Anosov element be expressed as a product of two periodic elements?\N\end{itemize}\NAdditionally, the authors provide explicit examples of infinite metacyclic groups and their geometric realizations.
