Infinite simple groups with no proper abnormal subgroups

From MaRDI portal

A subgroup \(H\) of a group \(G\) is said to be abnormal if \(g \in \langle H \cup H^{g} \rangle\) for every \(g \in G\). These subgroups were studied by \textit{P. Hall} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 43, 507--528 (1937; Zbl 0018.01001)], although the term was given much later by \textit{R. W. Carter} [Math. Z. 75, 136--139 (1961; Zbl 0168.27301)].\N\NIn this paper, the author constructs infinite simple groups without proper abnormal subgroups. Using a modification of an embedding theorem by \textit{V. N. Obraztsov} [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 61, No. 2, 267--288 (1996; Zbl 0874.20014)], the paper provides a family of torsion-free simple groups \(H\) with no maximal subgroups and such that either \(|H| = \aleph_0\) or \(|H| = \aleph_1\), in the latter case every proper subgroup being countable. These examples also yield a negative answer to a question of \textit{L. A. Kurdachenko} et al. [J. Group Theory 9, No. 4, 507--518 (2006; Zbl 1103.20021)] concerning the relation between the absence of abnormal subgroups and local nilpotency.
