Infinite step billiards.
In [Nonlinearity 11, No. 4, 991--1013 (1998; Zbl 0910.58025)] and [Nonlinearity 13, No. 4, 1275--1292 (2000; Zbl 0983.37051)] (in collaboration with \textit{G. Degli Magno} and \textit{M. Lenci}) we defined a class of non-compact polygonal billiards, the infinite step billiards: to a given sequence of non-negative numbers \(\{p_n\}_{n\in\mathbb N}\), such that \(p_n\searrow 0\), there corresponds a table \(P:=\bigcup_{n\in\mathbb N}[n,n + 1]\times[0,p_n]\).NEWLINENEWLINEThe aim of this contribution is to overview some of these results. In particular, we will focus on the ergodic and topological properties of these non-compact dynamical systems. We show that generically these systems are ergodic for almost all initial velocities, and the entropy with respect to a wide class of measures is zero.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0966.00028].
