Infinity valued partial metrics

From MaRDI portal

This article presents a natural extension of partial metric theory with a historical flavour. Partial metrics, introduced by Matthews to model partial information in computation, were closely connected to Kopperman's interest in generalized metrics and non-Hausdorff topology.\N\NBuilding on this foundation, the paper introduces infinite partial metrics, which are essentially partial metrics whose co-domain includes infinity. The authors show that every infinite partial metric induces a topology that is partial metrizable, while the converse does not hold in general. This result clarifies the scope and limitations of this generalization and situates it within the development of generalized metric spaces, including pseudo-metrics and quasi-metrics. By linking the mathematical development to historical motivations, the article demonstrates how these generalizations naturally raise questions in non-Hausdorff topology and in the deeper ontologies of mathematics -- a path that Kopperman pursued throughout his career.\N\NOverall, the article is clear, well-motivated, and combines technical rigor with historical insight, making a meaningful contribution to the theory of generalized metrics.
