Integrable geodesic flows with simultaneously diagonalisable quadratic integrals

From MaRDI portal

On an \(n\)-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\), the authors refer to a flow as geodesic if it arises from the Hamiltonian system on \(T^*M\) generated from the Hamiltonian \(H(x,p) = \frac{1}{2} g^{i j } p_i p_j\). They study the system where the geodesic flow admits \(n\) integrals that are quadratic in the momenta and are simultaneously diagonalizable at the tangent space for every point. They show that if these conditions hold, then they arise from the Stäckel construction, described, for example in [\textit{L.P. Eisenhart}, Ann. of Math. (2) 35, 284--205 (1934; Zbl 0009.38002)]. Consequently, the metric admits orthogonal separation of variables.\N\NMetrics derived from the Stäckel construction admit orthogonal separation of variables in the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, so the equation for their geodesics can be locally solved in quadratures according to [\textit{A.V. Bolsinov} et al., Forum Mathematicum 37(1), 13--41 (2025; Zbl 1559.37061; \textit{E. G. Kalnins} et al., Separation of variables and superintegrability. The symmetry of solvable systems. Bristol: IOP Publishing (2018; Zbl 1416.35002)].
