Intelligent software agents
Some complex types of computer software are called intelligent agents. The term `intelligent' hints at approaches of artificial intelligence to build this software. The book comprises two parts. Part one concerns basics of software agents. First, the authors point out the internet and WWW as agent's working area. Therefore, three categories are seen: information agent, cooperation agent, transaction agent. As characteristics of software agents are described: reactivity the feature to react to events within the environment of an agent, goal orientation the feature to start the work because of an especial situation, autonomous working the feature to reach out the goal without support of the user. (But, which correct software has not that capability?), mobility the agent's feature to walk through the network, communication/cooperation the feature to interact with the environment the agents. The major component of the environment is the agent's user. But, communication and cooperation between agents also is possible, character the feature to give human-like behaviour (say the authors). Next subject in part one are the components of an agent. The starting point to explain the architecture is to distinguish between input -- intelligent working -- output. Intelligent working is built of information fusion -- information processing -- action. Mobile agents work with an especial basic software. There are three layers: communication layer, security layer, agent layer. The discussion on architecture of agents is complemented by explaining of realized agent systems. The base of communication/cooperation between agents is a protocol. The most important protocol is the KQML -- knowledge query and manipulation language. Speech acts are the basic concepts of that protocol. Communication is based on a black board, essentially. Contract nets are built for purposes of cooperation. Such a net is responsible to distribution of partial tasks resulting the whole problem. An additional feature is negotiation on the distribution. Next section contains development methods and tools. Here are discussed Tcl/Tk and Telescript. The Java language is mentioned. Part two of this book con concerns application of software agents, As application areas are seen: Information retrieval and filtering, news watching, advising and focusing, entertainment, cooperative working, electronic commerce, manufactoring. The principles at each application area are discussed. Additional are named realized systems in most of areas. So, the reader finds such products as search machines, Web Browser Intelligence (IBM), Fire fly, Lotus Notes Mail, MAXIMS and others.
