Introductory biostatistics
The book under review is a revised and updated second edition of the original book first published in 2003. This new edition has increased by several chapters and the implementation of methods is now illustrated using \texttt{R} in addition to \texttt{SAS}. This monograph presents on a total of 591 pages an introduction into biostatistical methods. The book is organized in 14 chapters and an appendix, and is designed for upper-undergraduate and graduate students.NEWLINENEWLINEDescriptive methods are introduced in Chapter 1 for categorical data (proportions, rates and ratios) and in Chapter 2 for continuous data (numerical and graphical methods). After presentation of probability and probability models in Chapter 3, Chapter 4 focuses on the estimation of parameters (means, proportions, odds ratios, correlation coefficients). General principles of statistical tests of significance are discussed in Chapter 5, whereas comparison of population proportions is provided in Chapter 6 and comparison of population means is illustrated in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 concentrates on analysis of variance. The following two chapters focus on simple and multiple regression methods (Chapter 9 linear and Chapter 10 logistic regression models). Chapter 11 deals with methods for count data. In Chapter 12, methods for repeatedly measured responses are introduced for various types of data. Analysis of survival data and data from matched studies is summarized in Chapter 13. The last Chapter 14 deals with aspects of study design and sample size calculation. The volume ends with an appendix providing statistical tables and solutions to selected exercises.NEWLINENEWLINEIn summary, the book under review is strongly recommended as an introduction to basic biostatistical principles with a huge set of supportive exercises in each chapter.
