Invariant rings and fields of finite groups

From MaRDI portal

This survey arcticle is a complement to those surveys given by \textit{R. P. Stanley} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 1, 475-511 (1979; Zbl 0497.20002)] and \textit{L. Smith} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 34, 211-250 (1997; Zbl 0904.13004)] with very recent developments of polynomial and rational functions invariant under the action of a finite linear group. Special emphasis is given to the modular case, where the characteristic of the ground field divides the order of the group. In particular the Cohen-Macaulay property of the ring of invariants is discussed. Finally the case of fields of invariants is treated. In particular the case it is discussed when the field of invariants is purely transcendental over the base field [see also the authors' paper: ``Invariant fields of finite irreducible reflection groups, Math. Ann. 315, No. 4, 569-586 (1999)]. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0903.00035].
