Inverse Stefan problems

From MaRDI portal

The book deals with the direct Stefan problem (free boundaries) relative to quasilinear parabolic equations and some inverse problems of these equations. Such problems arise in high temperature processes (metallurgy, aircraft, astronautics, power engineering) and in hydrology, exploitation of oil-gas fields, etc. In order to solve an inverse problem the following points have to be studied 1. Mastery of the special process both experimentally and theoretically, 2. Possibility of mathematical modelling of the process, 3. Mastery of the direct problem both theoretically and numerically, 4. Studying of the information content of the inverse problem, i.e., to find out which internal parameters of a system inaccessible to measurement can be determined in a stable and unique manner, 5. Development of algorithms for the numerical solution of the inverse problem. Most inverse problems are ill-posed. Therefore regularization algorithms -- using additional information -- must be developed. This book carries out in detail the foregoing points which have to be studied for an inverse problem. In a certain sense this monograph is comprehensive. The statements of all inverse problems are studied in Hölder spaces, which ensure unique solvability in a global sense. To regularize the special ill-posed problems the author uses the quasi-solution method (of V. K. Ivanov) relative to a minimization problem. Further, numerical algorithms are developed. Many scientists working in this field will be interested in this book. The practical importance of inverse and ill-posed problems is such that they may be considered among the pressing problems of current mathematical research.
