The van der Waals theory of phase transitions is explored. Properties of the free energy functional, specifically finite size effects, interface fluctuations and weak convergence properties under inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions (referred as Dobrushin boundary conditions) are investigated. The emergence of not translation invariant states (Dobrushin states) is established for short range ferromagnetic lattice models of statistical mechanics in dimensions not less than three. In two dimensions the Gibbs measure converges to translation invariant states. The major part of discussion refers to the \(\Phi ^4_1\) measure with Dobrushin boundary conditions. A probabilistic counterpart of the problem (a representation in terms of a diffusion process), that derives form the transfer matrix arguments, is presented.
