In the Euclidean space, projections of surfaces are objects of many papers in differential geometry and singularity theory. Famous results in the large are the Morse inequalities, connecting height functions and the topology in the pure presence of non-degenerate critical points. More delicate are singularities of higher order, most results only apply locally. Here, a study is initiated in the hyperbolic \( 3 \)-space for the projections of surfaces into flat objects of different kinds, namely planes (totally geodesic surfaces) and horospheres, with some extensions to the higher dimensional situation. The projection proceeds by pursuing geodesics from the points of the given surface until they hit the flat object orthogonally. Main results are classifications based on a list of singularities of codimension \( \leq 3 \) by \textit{J. H. Rieger} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 36, 351--369 (1987; Zbl 0639.58007)], together with duality theorems concerning the bifurcation sets of families of projections. Also, relations are proved between the curvature of the surface and the curvatures of the contour and the normal section of the surface.
