Suppose \(G\) is a connected, reductive \(p\)-adic group. The Langlands classification provides a bijection between the set of irreducible admissible representations of \(G\) and the set of Langlands triples \((P,\nu,\tau)\). Here, \(P\) is a (standard) parabolic subgroup with Levi factorization \(P=MU\); \(\tau\) is an irreducible, tempered representation of \(M\); and \(\nu\) belongs to a space generated by rational characters of \(M\), and satisfies an appropriate negativity condition. More specifically, the representation of \(G\) associated to \((P,\nu,\tau)\) is the unique irreducible subrepresentation of the parabolically induced representation \(i_{G,M}(\exp \nu\otimes\tau)\). Suppose we apply the Jacquet restriction functor \(r_{M,G}\) to the above induced representation. The main theorem of this paper, already in the folklore, is that the resulting representation contains \(\exp \nu\otimes \tau\) with multiplicity one, and contains no other subquotients with central exponent \(\nu\). The authors then prove a dual version of the Langlands classification. That is, they associate to each representation of \(G\) a ``dual'' Langlands triple, where the tempered representation \(\tau\) is replaced by an ``anti-tempered'' representation \(\theta\), i.e., the dual of \(\theta\) under the involution of Aubert, Bernstein, and Schneider-Stuhler is tempered. This provides for general groups an analogue of the Zelevinsky classification for general linear groups.
