Let \(X\) be a compact Hausdorff space and let \(C(X)\) denote the space of complex-valued continuous functions. An isometric shift on \(C(X)\) is an into isometry such that co-dimension of \(T(C(X))\) is one and \(\bigcap T^n(C(X))=\{0\}\). These were extensively studied by \textit{A. Gutek, D. Hart, J. Jamison} and \textit{M. Rajagopalan} [J. Funct. Anal. 101, No.~1, 97--119 (1991; Zbl 0818.47028)], where they classified them as Type I and Type II. It is known that existence of a \(T\) of Type II implies that \(X\) is separable. Also, existence of an isometric shift implies that \(X\) satisfies the countable chain condition [\textit{A. Gutek} and \textit{J. Norden}, Topology Appl. 114, No.~1, 73--89 (2001; Zbl 0984.47028)]. It has been a long standing open problem if for a non-separable \(X\), \(C(X)\) can have an isometric shift. In the present paper, the author settles this in the affirmative. Among the examples of such \(X\) is the topological union of the Stone space of \(L^{\infty}\) on the unit circle and the one point compactification of the natural numbers.
