This interesting and well written article is an accessible exposition of one of the central results in modern group theory -- Grigorchuk's original construction solving the Milnor problem on group growth. The authors' creative style of the exposition allows readers having only basic algebraic knowledge to completely understand this sophisticated example. In this way, the article opens the doors to the dynamically developing theory of group growth for experts from diverse areas and even for university mathematics majors.
