For the eigenvalue problem of the Laplace operator (allowing also a weight function) in a square, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, the authors consider its finite element solution using the non-conforming Wilson element on a uniform rectangular grid. They give explicitely the \(O(h^2)\) terms of the error of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, show also that the Wilson eigenvalues approximate the true ones from below, and use their results in numerical experiments to improve the convergence speed to \(O(h^4)\) by applying Richardson extrapolation.
