This concise textbook on applied Fourier analysis presents the mathematics that is fundamental to applications in digital signal processing. The main emphasis of the author is on practical implementation of algorithms in multimedia applications. Key algorithms are presented in pseudocode and Standard C. This book consists of 6 chapters and 2 appendices (with solutions of 100 exercises and some basic background material). Chapters 1 and 2 have introductory character. In Chapter 1, some properties of integer arithmetic and floating-point arithmetic are discussed. Chapter 2 presents an overview of linear algebra. The following chapters form the core of this text. Chapter 3 examines main results of Fourier analysis (such as Fourier series, Fourier integrals, discrete Fourier transform, fast Fourier transform, discrete Hartley transform, discrete sine/cosine transforms). Chapter 4 gives an introduction to approximation methods (such as polynomial/spline interpolation, approximation from shift-invariant spaces, Shannon's sampling theorem). Chapter 5 sketches the theory of continuous/discrete wavelets as well as the wavelet algorithms. Chapter 6 presents some results on coding, decoding, and error detection. Suggestions for further reading are given at the end of each chapter. Concrete applications in signal processing are not described. This well-written textbook on applied Fourier analysis is very convenient for students in applied mathematics and computer science. This book can also serve as useful reference for researchers interested in the mathematics underlying multimedia software design and implementation.
