    Let \(X\) be a Banach space; a subset \(S\subset X\times X^*\) is said to be of type \(NI\) if, for every \((x^*,x^{**})\in X^*\times X^{**}\), \[ \inf_{(s,s^*)\in S} \langle\varphi(s)-x^{**}, s^*-x^*\rangle\leq 0, \] where the linear operator \(\varphi: X\rightarrow X^{**}\) is such that \[ \langle x^*,x\rangle = \langle\varphi(x), x^*\rangle, \quad \forall x\in X,\;x^*\in X^*. \] Generalizing a result of \textit{R.\,T.\thinspace Rockafellar} [Math.\ Ann.\ 185, 81--90 (1970; Zbl 0181.42202)], the author shows that if \(S\) is maximal monotone of type \(NI\), then the closures of the sets \(R(S) = \{s^*\in X^*\mid \exists s\in X: (s,s^*)\in S\}\) and \(D(S)= \{s\in X\mid\exists s^*\in X^*: (s,s^*)\in S\}\) are convex.
