Let \(f\) be a modular form of weight \(k\) with respect to the group \(\Gamma_0 (N)\). In the case \(f\) is an eigenform with respect to all Atkin-Lehner involutions of \(\Gamma_0(N)\) and \(N\) is a square free integer, the authors give congruence relations modulo a prime number \(p\) among the Fourier coefficients of \(f\). Those congruence relations are deduced from applying the Residue theorem to a modular form of weight 2 constructed by \(f\), Eisenstein series \(E_m(z)\) and the modular discriminant \(\Delta(z)\) and from the well-known congruence for Eisenstein series \(E_{p-1}(z)\equiv 1 \mod p\). As applications, they give a linear relation among coefficients of new forms and congruence relations among special values of Dedekind zeta functions of real quadratic fields. Further they give some sufficient conditions for a modular form to be non-\(p\)-ordinary.
