A Hausdorff topological semilattice \(S\) is defined to be \(H\)-closed if \(S\) is closed in each Hausdorff topological semilattice that contains \(S\) as a topological subsemilattice; \(S\) is absolutely \(H\)-closed if each continuous homomorphic image of \(S\) is an \(H\)-closed topological semilattice. The authors prove that a linearly ordered topological semilattice \(S\) is \(H\)-closed if and only if \(S\) is absolutely \(H\)-closed and if and only if each non-empty subset \(A\subset S\) has an infimum and a supremum and they belong to the closure of \(A\). It is proved that each linearly ordered topological semilattice is a dense subsemilattice of an \(H\)-closed semilattice. However, there exists an \(H\)-closed semilattice, which is not compact.
