This article deals with isoparametric submanifolds of Eucliden spaces and spheres. It is shown that the mean curvature flow transforms an isoparametric submanifold to another isoparametric submanifold. The main result states that the mean curvature flow starting with an initial isoparametric submanifold converges in finite time to a smooth submanifold of lower dimension (a focal submanifold). Conversely, every focal submanifold occurs in this way. Furthermore it is shown that in the generic case the mean curvature flow has type I singularities. There are specific results on the special case of orbits of polar actions.
