Let \((X, \mu)\) be a positive \(\sigma\)-finite measure space. A semigroup \(S(t)\) in \(L^2(X)\) satisfies the contraction property if \(\|S(t)y\|_p \leq \|y\|_p\) for all \(y \in L^2(X) \cap L^p(X)\) (\(1\leq p\leq\infty\)). If, in addition, \(S(t)\) is selfadjoint in \(L^2(X)\), then \(S(t)\) is a diffusion semigroup. This paper is concerned with the tensor product extension \(\widetilde S(t)\) (defined in Section~2) of \(S(t)\) to \(L^p(X,{\mathcal B})\), where the Banach space \({\mathcal B}\) satisfies the UMD property (\(L^p\)-boundedness of the Hilbert transform, introduced by J.\,Bourgain and D.\,Burkholder) and with extensions of \(\widetilde S(t)\) to sectors of the complex plane. Among other results, the author gives a generalization to \(\widetilde S(t)\) of a maximal theorem proved by E.\,Stein and M.\,Cowling for \(S(t)\), a version of the Hopf--Dunford-Schwartz ergodic theorem, and bounds on imaginary powers of the generator \(\widetilde A\) of \(\widetilde S(t)\).
