The authors study pointed Hopf algebras over the field of complex numbers with group of group-likes isomorphic to the symmetric group \(S_n\). The problem of deciding when the Nichols algebra associated to an irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld module over this group is infinite dimensional is considered, in the general framework of the Lifting Method developed by the first author and \textit{H.-J. Schneider} [in Math. Sci. Res. Inst. Publ. 43, 1-68 (2002; Zbl 1011.16025)]. The irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules correspond in this context to pairs \((O,\rho)\), where \(O\) is a conjugacy class in \(S_n\) and \(\rho\) is an irreducible representation of the centralizer of an element \(x\in O\). The main result gives necessary conditions on the pair \((O,\rho)\) in order that the Nichols algebra associated with it be finite dimensional. The main techniques used in the proof of the main result are those based on non-Abelian subracks in the paper [New techniques for pointed Hopf algebras, to appear in Contemp. Math., eprint arXiv:0803.3486] by the first two authors, and an extension of those in the paper by \textit{M. Graña} [Contemp. Math. 267, 111-134 (2000; Zbl 0974.16031)].
