Classical orthogonal polynomials in one variable can be characterized by means of the Rodrigues formula, which provides an expression of the \(n\)-th classical orthogonal polynomial in terms of a \(n\)-th order derivative. In several variables the situation is different, and it is necessary to clarify what classical orthogonal polynomial means, in order to extend this type of characterization. In this paper, the authors extend the concept of classical orthogonal polynomial sequences in two variables by defining what they call classical in an extended sense. By using the second kind Kronecker power of a matrix, they prove a matrix Rodrigues-type formula for these classical orthogonal polynomials. Finally, some particular cases are given.
