The Löwner-Heinz inequality states that, if \(A\geq B\geq 0\), then \(A^p\geq B^p \geq 0\) for \(0\leq p\leq 1\). The condition \(p \in [0,1]\) is too restrictive, since this assertion does not hold for \(p \notin [0,1]\). \textit{T.\,Furuta} [Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 101, No.\,1, 85--88 (1987; Zbl 0721.47023)] established the following interesting result: If \(A\geq B\geq 0\), then, for each \(r\geq 0\), \((A^{\frac{r}2}A^{p}A^{\frac{r}2})^{\frac1q} \geq(A^{\frac{r}2}B^{p}A^{\frac{r}2})^{\frac1q}\) and \((B^{\frac{r}2}A^{p}B^{\frac{r}2})^{\frac1q}\geq(B^{\frac{r}2}B^{p}B^{\frac{r}2})^{\frac1q}\) for any \(p\geq 0\) and any \(q\geq 1\) with \((1+r)q\geq p+r\). This result has exerted a lot of influence on the development of operator inequalities, norm inequalities and operator equations. In the present survey paper, the author reviews, among other things, remarkable achievements of many mathematicians in log majorization, Aluthge transformation, and order preserving operator functions.
