Integral Chow rings for smooth quotient stacks were defined by \textit{D.~Edidin} and \textit{W.~Graham} [Invent. Math. 131, No. 3, 595--634 (1998; Zbl 0940.14003)]. The main result of the paper under review is the computation of the Chow ring for the moduli stack \({\mathcal H}_g\) of smooth hyperelliptic curves of even genus \(g\) as a quotient of a polynomial ring in two variables. This result contains as a special case \textit{A. Vistoli}'s presentation of the Chow ring of the moduli stack of genus \(2\) curves [Invent. Math. 131, No. 3, 635--644 (1998; Zbl 0940.14003)] and \textit{A. Arsie} and \textit{A. Vistoli}'s description of the Picard group of the moduli stack of hyperelliptic curves [Compos. Math. 140, No. 3, 647--666 (2004; Zbl 1169.14301)]. Furthermore, the authors are able to identify the generators of the Chow ring with the Chern classes of an explicitly described vector bundle on \({\mathcal H}_g\). The proof relies on the description given by Arsie and Vistoli of \({\mathcal H}_g\) (\(g\) even) as the quotient stack of the space of homogeneous binary polynomials of degree \(2g+2\) without multiple roots by the action of the general linear group. This reduces the computation of the Chow ring of \({\mathcal H}_g\) to the computation of the \(\roman{GL}_2\)-equivariant Chow ring of this space of polynomials.
