A Banach space \(X\) is polyhedral if the unit ball of \(F^*\) has finitely many extreme points for all finite-dimensional subspaces \(F\) of \(X\). If \(X\) is separable and polyhedral, then \(X\) is \(c_0\)-saturated (every infinite-dimensional subspace of \(X\) contains an isomorph of \(c_0\)) [\textit{V.\,P.\thinspace Fonf}, ``A property of Lindenstrauss--Phelps spaces'', Funct.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 13, 66--67 (1979; Zbl 0426.46012)]. If \(K\) is a countable compact metric space, then \(C(K)\) is \(c_0\)-saturated and \(C(K)^*\) is isometric to \(\ell_1\). The main result of this paper is, for \(1<p<\infty\), the construction of a space \(E_p\) which is isomorphic to a polyhedral space, has an unconditional basis, does not embed into \(C(K)\) for any countable compact metric space \(K\) and has \(\ell_p\) as a quotient space. This solves problems of various authors as explained in the excellent introduction, which also explains how these examples relate to other constructions of \(c_0\)-saturated spaces.
