This paper studies the long time behaviour of a forced weakly damped modified KdV equation of the form \(u_t+u^2 u_x+ u_{xxx}+\gamma u=\eta f(x)\) where \(x\) takes values on the whole of \(\mathbb R\). The equation is challenging from a mathematical point of view on account of the strongly nonlinear convection term \(u^2 u_x\) (as compared with the standard KdV equation) and the lack of strong dispersive terms of the form \(u_{xxxx}\). The authors prove a priori estimates for the solution in \(L^2(\mathbb R)\), \(H^s(\mathbb R)\), \(s=1,2,3\) using Sobolev interpolation inequalities and then conclude the existence of a unique solution \(u(t)\in L^2(\mathbb R^+,H^3(\mathbb R))\). The solution operator \(S(t)\) is continuous in \(H^2(\mathbb R)\) and there exists a bounded absorbing set \(B\subset H^3(\mathbb R)\) in \(H^2(\mathbb R)\). Furthermore, using the Kuratowski \(\alpha\)-noncompactness measure, the existence of a compact attractor of \(S(t)\) in \(H^2(\mathbb R)\) is shown. Finally, a discretization scheme is proposed for the numerical treatments of the equation and a necessary condition for stability of this scheme, in terms of the initial condition, is proved.
