Let \(L\) be a linear differential operator with constant coefficients of order \(n\) and complex eigenvalues \(\lambda _0,\lambda _1, \cdots ,\lambda _n \). Assume that the set \(U_n\) of all solutions of the equation \(Lf=0\) is closed under complex conjugation. A system of functions \(p_{n,k}\in U_n,\;k=0,\cdots,n\) is called a Bernstein-like basis for \(a\neq b\in \mathbb{R} \), if each function \(p_{n,k}\) has a zero of order \(k\) at \(a\) and a zero of order \(n-k\) at \(b\). The Bernstein type operators \(B_nf:=\sum _{k=0}^n\alpha _kf(t_k)p_{n,k}(x)\) are considered. It is proved that if \(\lambda _0\) and \(\lambda _1\) are real and distinct, then there exist points \(a=t_0<t_1<\cdots <t_n=b \) and positive numbers \(\alpha _0,\cdots ,\alpha _n \), such that \(B_ne^{\lambda _jx}=e^{\lambda _jx}\), for \(j=0,1.\) The second main result gives a sufficient condition guaranteeing the uniform convergence of \(B_nf\) to \(f\) for each \(f\in C[a,b].\)
