Let \((W',S)\) be a Coxeter system and \(C'\) be a building of type \((W',S)\). Change some of the entries in the corresponding Coxeter matrix to \(\infty\) to obtain a new Coxeter system \((W,S)\); compare the author [Duke Math. J. 55, 105--139 (1987; Zbl 0631.57019)]. The author constructs a new building \(C\) of type \((W,S)\), which is realized by the universal cover of the geometric realization of the poset of spherical residues of \(C'\). This yields many new examples of buildings, in particular new examples of 3-dimensional hyperbolic buildings. If \(C'\) is spherical, then the automorphism group of \(C\) admits a torsion-free uniform lattice.
