The article under review summarizes the results of the author's PhD thesis. Details appear as [\textit{P. Pelaez}, ``Multiplicative properties of the slice filtration,'' Asterisque 335 (2011; Zbl 1235.14003)]. Voevodsky's slice filtration on the motivic stable homotopy category, as defined by \textit{V. Voevodsky} [in: Open problems in the motivic stable homotopy theory. I. Motives, polylogarithms and Hodge theory. Part I: Motives and polylogarithms. Papers from the International Press conference, Irvine, CA, USA, June 1998. Somerville, MA: International Press. Int. Press Lect. Ser. 3, No. I, 3--34 (2002; Zbl 1047.14012)], is lifted to the model category level. This enables the author to analyze the relation between the slice filtration and the smash product. One application is the existence of natural external pairings in the motivic Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence. Another application yields that the slices of any motivic spectrum can be viewed as (big) motives in the sense of Voevodsky, provided the base field has characteristic zero [\textit{O. Röndigs, P.A. Østvær}, Adv. Math. 219, No. 2, 689--727 (2008; Zbl 1180.14015)].
