The authors show how the methods of \textit{N. Bournaveas} and \textit{B. Perthame} [J. Math. Pures Appl. (9) 80, No. 5, 517--534 (2001; Zbl 1036.82023)] and \textit{N. Bournaveas} and \textit{S. GutiƩrrez} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 23, No. 2, 481--512 (2007; Zbl 1132.35320); SIAM J. Math. Anal. 40, No. 2, 653--674 (2008; Zbl 1162.82025)] can be used to prove velocity averaging lemmas in the hyperbolic Sobolev spaces for the kinetic transport equation which they take to be \(\partial_tf+v\cdot\nabla_xf/| v|=g_o+\nabla_v\cdot g_1\). Here \(v\) is allowed to vary in the whole space \(\mathbb{R}^d\) and the velocity field \(a(v)=v/| v|\) lies on the unit sphere.. The authors work in dimensions \(d\geq3\) and, in contrast with the previous, cited works, they allow right-hand sides with velocity derivatives in any direction and not necessarily tangential to the sphere. Velocity fields on a sphere as treated here arise naturally in mathematical biology in the context of chemotaxis, and they occur in mathematical physics in the phenomenon of radiation transfer. The results of the present paper can be used to prove the compactness of averages and hence of the global existence of weak solutions for the resonant Vlasov-wave system.
