The author conceives of this survey article as a sequel to Goss's dictionary between number fields and function fields [\textit{D. Goss}, Dictionary, in: The arithmetic of function fields. Proceedings of the workshop at the Ohio State University, 1991, Columbus, Ohio (USA). Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 475--482(1992; Zbl 0771.00031)]. In particular, Hartl's dictionary is written in a two-column format, with the left-hand column detailing the mixed characteristic Fontaine-Theory (whose goal is to classify \(p\)-adic Galois representations of \(p\)-adic fields), while the right-hand column describes the corresponding structures in equal positive characteristic (as developed by Genestier-Lafforgue and Hartl). The advice given by the author in his introduction is well taken: ``As with most dictionaries the reader will hardly want to read it from first to last page.'' Nevertheless, this dictionary does provide a convenient way to learn about the myriad of period rings in this subject, and it also describes the parallel between \(p\)-divisible groups in mixed characteristic and local shtuka in equal characteristic.
