Let \(\overline{M}\) be a compact Kähler manifold of complex dimension \(n\) and \(D=\sum_{i=1}^{p}D_i\) a normal crossing divisor. Consider the quasi-projective manifold \(M=\overline{M}\setminus D\). Let \(\overline{\omega }\) be the Kähler metric on \(\overline{M}\), and let \[ \omega=C\overline{\omega}-2\sum_{i=1}^{p}\text{d}\text{d}^c \log(-\log|s_i|^2), \] where \(s_i\) is a defining function for \(D_i\) and \(C\) is chosen large enough so that \(\omega\) is positive definite on \(M\). A Poincaré metric on \(M\) is a metric uniformly equivalent to \(\omega\), with bounded sectional curvature. The paper is devoted to the construction of Poincaré Kähler--Einstein metrics on \(M\setminus E\) (where \(E\) is an effective divisor in \(\overline{M} \)) which degenerate or grow at most like a pole along \(E\). The construction follows from the study of corresponding singular Monge--Ampère equations.
