Gradings by abelian groups of the classical simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers other than \({\mathfrak o}(8,{\mathbb C})\) were considered by \textit{M.~Havlíček, J.~Patera} and \textit{E.~Pelantová} [ Linear Algebra Appl. 277, No. 1-3, 97--125 (1998; Zbl 0939.17020)] in a computational way, and later on by \textit{Yu. A. Bahturin, I. P. Shestakov} and \textit{M. V. Zaicev} [J. Algebra 283, No. 2, 849--868 (2005; Zbl 1066.17018)] in a more conceptual way. The existence of the triality automorphisms (outer order \(3\) automorphisms) in \({\mathfrak o}(8,{\mathbb C})\) makes this case the most difficult and interesting one. Among the abelian group gradings, the fine gradings are those which cannot be refined, so that any other grading can be obtained by coarsening a fine grading. The paper under review is devoted to provide a very detailed and concrete description of the fine gradings (up to equivalence) of \({\mathfrak o}(8,{\mathbb C})\). The authors use some previous partial results by several authors which are not complete, and as a consequence there are three missing fine gradings in their list. A complete list of the \(17\) non equivalent fine abelian group gradings on \({\mathfrak o}(8,{\mathbb C})\) has been given recently by the reviewer (\url{arXiv:0906.0655v2}).
