There are several approaches to Cohen-Macaulay approximations. The original one, by Auslan\-der-Buchweitz, was purely module-theoretic. The published version of their work deals with an axiomatic setup, which subsumes their module-theoretic construct. It also opens up the possibility of generalizing approximations by modules of finite \(G\)-dimension to abelian categories with suitable substitutes for modules of finite injective dimension and modules of finite projective dimension. This is what is being done in the paper under review. More precisely, the paper deals with the issue of balance for relative cohomology arising from Auslander-Buchweitz approximations. The main result establishes the balance of the relative Ext functors evaluated on objects of finite homological dimension.
