Let \(X\) be a Tychonoff space and let \(C_p(X)\) denote the space of all continuous real-valued functions on \(X\) with the topology of pointwise convergence. We give \(\mathbb R^X\) the product topology and call \(P\subset\mathbb R^X\) a frame for \(C_p(X)\) in case \(C_p(X)\subset P\). Results which characterize the topology of \(X\) in terms of the topology of \(P\) have been obtained by \textit{O. G. Okunev} [Topology Appl. 49, No. 2, 149--166 (1993; Zbl 0796.54026)] among others. We say that \(P\) has countable tightness in case the closure \(\overline A\) of each \(A\subset P\) is the union of closures of countable subsets of \(A\). In the present paper the author shows, among other things, that \(C_p(X)\) has a \(\sigma\)-compact frame of countable tightness if, and only if, \(X\) is compact and countable. We say that \(C_p(X)\) is \(\omega\)-embedded in \(P\) in case each point of \(P\) is in the closure of some countable subset of \(C_p(X)\). The author then shows that \(C_p(X)\) is \(\omega\)-embedded in a \(\sigma\)-compact frame if, and only if, \(X\) is compact and metrizable. Various counterexamples are given, and ten open questions are posed.
