The article under review addresses the question of ``geometric realizations of modular forms''. Here geometric realization refers to the property that the \(L\)-series of the newform occurs as a factor of the zeta-function of the variety. The paper focuses on Calabi-Yau threefolds and newforms of weight \(4\). The main result is formulated in the following Theorem. Any known newform of weight \(4\) with rational coefficients and CM by an imaginary quadratic field \(K\neq {\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-4027})\) can be realized geometrically in a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold over \({\mathbb Q}\). The Calabi-Yau threefolds discussed here are constructed using generalized Kummer construction and the Weil restrictions. In fact, they are smooth models of quotients of the Weil restrictions of elliptic curves with CM of class number three.
