The authors analyze various geometrical and algebraic aspects of complex graded Lie algebras. Specifically, for the variety \(X\in \mathbb{P}^{n^{2}-1}\) that parameterizes the graded contractions [\textit{R. V. Moody} and \textit{J. Patera}, J. Phys. A, Math. Gen. 24, No. 10, 2227--2257 (1991; Zbl 0751.17025)] of a fixed \(G\)-graded Lie algebra (\(G\) being an abelian group), its intersection with various special subvarieties of \(\mathbb{P}^{n^{2}-1}\) is analyzed, depending on the isomorphism class of the grading group \(G\). The irreducible components are classified, and for cyclic groups the Levi decomposition of the resulting graded Lie algebras determined, obtaining interesting exceptional Levi factors. The vanishing of certain homology groups is also proved.
