Take an unramified principal series representation \(\pi\) of \(GL(3)\) over a \(p\)-adic field, and restrict it to the maximal compact subgroup \(K\), then the restriction is a representation \(\varpi\) independent of \(\pi\). It decomposes into a direct sum of finite dimensional irreducible representations of \(K\) each appearing with finite multiplicity. The paper is an effort in explicating this decomposition. To each triple of integers \(c=(c_1,c_2,c_3)\) with \(0\leq c_1,c_2\leq c_3\leq c_1+c_2\), a finite dimensional representation \(V_c\) of \(K\) is associated. It is established that \(\varpi\) is a direct sum of \(V_c\); for \(c,c'\), \(V_c\) and \(V_{c'}\) are either equivalent or have no irreducible components in common. The paper also gives a necessary and sufficient condition for \(V_c\) to be irreducible. The corresponding problem for \(GL(2)\) was previously studied by Casselman and Silberger.
