Remarks on missing faces and generalized lower bounds on face numbers (Q1028860)

Some lower bounds on face numbers for simplicial complexes are discussed. For simplicial polytopes, McMullens's generalized lower bounds on face numbers were proved by \textit{R. P. Stanley} [Adv. Math. 35, 236--238 (1980; Zbl 0427.52006)]. Stanley's result implies \textit{D. Barnette}'s lower bound theorem [Pac. J. Math. 46, 349--354 (1973; Zbl 0264.52006)]. In turn, Barnette's result implies that the simplex minimizes all face numbers among simplicial polytopes with the same dimension. The author proves similar results for more general class consisting of \(d\)-dimensional simplicial complexes \(\Delta\) with nonzero reduced \(d\)-homology (\(\tilde H_d(\Delta, Z)\not= 0\)) and with no missing faces above a fixed dimension [\textit{P. McMullen}, Isr. J. Math. 9, 559--570 (1971; Zbl 0209.53701); \textit{S. R. Gal}, Discrete Comput. Geom. 34, No. 2, 269--284 (2005; Zbl 1085.52005)].
