\textit{L. Olsen} [Glasg. Math. J. 45, No. 3, 539--543 (2003; Zbl 1036.28009)] showed that for certain invariant sets on \(\mathbb{R}\) (examples of which include the set of Liouville numbers and the Besicovitch-Eggleston set of non-normal numbers), its \(h\)-dimensional Hausdorff measure (\(h\) is strongly concave at 0) equals 0 or infinity. This note refines Olsen's result: A translation-invariant metric measure \(\mu\) on \(\mathbb{R}\) has a scaling property (SP) such that for every \(\lambda \in (0,1)\), there exists \(b(\lambda) > \lambda\) with \(\mu(\lambda X) \geq b(\lambda)\mu(X)\) for all \(X \subseteq \mathbb{R}\). If \(X\) is a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-invariant subset of \(\mathbb{R}\) with \(X/q \subseteq X\) for some \(q \in \mathbb{N} \backslash \{1\}\), then \(\mu(X) = 0\) or \(\mu (X \cap O) = \infty\) for every non-empty open set \(O\). The author further shows that if the dimension function \(h\) is strongly concave at 0, then both Hausdorff and packing \(h\)-measures on \(\mathbb{R}\) satisfy (SP).
