The author expresses the static electric and magnetic fields with vector potentials. The most interesting case is when the media is anisotropic. At each point in the space, the dielectric permittivity and the magnetic permeability can be spectrally decomposed and the vector potentials are then expanded in terms of these eigenvectors with space dependent coefficients. Two differential operators are introduced closely related to the curl and divergence operators and with these the electric field and the electric displacement vector be obtained from the electric vector potential. Here it is interesting to note how the eigenvalues enters as multipliers in the modal expansion of the electric displacement vector compared to the expansion of the electric field. In the application sector, the author studies different types of crystals with this framework.
