The well-oiled machine of Nevanlinna--Pick interpolation is conquering new multivariate operator theory areas. The unit ball in \(\mathbb C^n\) provides a natural geometric background for this expansion, already well underway due to the works of [\textit{J.\,Agler} and \textit{J.\,E.\thinspace McCarthy}, J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 175, No.\,1, 111--124 (2000; Zbl 0957.47013); \textit{D.\,C.\,V.\thinspace Greene, S.\,Richter}, and \textit{C.\,Sundberg}, J.\ Funct.\ Anal.\ 194, No.\,2, 311--331 (2002; Zbl 1029.46020); \textit{D.\,Alpay} and \textit{C.\,Dubi}, Linear Algebra Appl.\ 382, 117--133 (2004; Zbl 1058.30028); \textit{W.\,Arveson}, Acta Math.\ 181, No.\,2, 159--228 (1998; Zbl 0952.46035); \textit{G.\,Popescu}, Mem.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 868 (2006; Zbl 1115.47016)], to name only a few contributions. The authors of the article under review have greatly contributed to the subject within the last decade. The present survey shows how practically all refined tools of bounded analytic interpolation in the unit disk can be transferred to the unit ball of \(\mathbb C^n\). Not always the generalization comes without effort. Without entering into details, we have to mention that all readers (whether advanced or beginners) will find in these pages a great deal of updated information (such as the Katsnelson--Kheifets-Yuditskii approach to interpolation, the Potapov--Dym parametrization of all solutions, the Arov--Grossman inverse scattering method, Popescu's free algebra techniques, and much more) about this fascinating field of modern operator theory.
