In this interesting paper the authors generalize the following fixed point result by \textit{R. Kannan} [Am. Math. Mon. 76, 405--408 (1969; Zbl 0179.28203)]. If \((X,d)\) is a complete metric space and \(T:X\to X\) satisfies the assumption \[ \exists \alpha\in [0,1/2) \forall x,y\in X : d(Tx,Ty)\leq \alpha d(x,Tx)+\alpha d(y,Ty), \] then \(T\) has a fixed point. An important result generalizing the Kannan theorem was proved by \textit{M. Kikkawa} and \textit{T. Suzuki} in [Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2008, Article ID 649749, 8 p. (2008; Zbl 1162.54019)] for maps in complete spaces: If there exists \(\alpha\in [0,1/2)\) such that \[ \forall x,y : \varphi(\alpha)d(x,Tx)\leq d(x,y) \text{ implies } d(Tx,Ty)\leq \alpha d(x,Tx)+\alpha d(y,Ty), \] then \(T\) has a unique fixed point \(z\) with \(\lim T^nx=z\) for every \(x\in X\), where \(\varphi(\alpha):=1\) for \(0\leq \alpha<\sqrt{2}-1\), and \(\varphi(\alpha):=1-\alpha\) for \(\sqrt{2}-1\leq \alpha<1/2\). Moreover, for every \(\alpha\in [0,1/2)\), \(\varphi(\alpha)\) is the best constant. Now, the authors consider the following more general condition: \[ \psi(\alpha,\beta)d(x,Tx)\leq d(x,y) \text{ implies } d(Tx,Ty)\leq \alpha d(x,Tx)+\beta d(y,Ty), \] for some \(\alpha,\beta\geq 0\) with \(\alpha+\beta<1\), and any \(x,y\in X\), where \(\psi(\alpha,\beta)\) is explicitly defined on \(\Delta:=\{(\alpha,\beta) : \alpha\geq 0, \beta\geq 0, \alpha+\beta<1\}\). Under this condition (Theorem 3.1) \(T\) has a unique fixed point \(z\) with \(\lim T^nx=z\) for every \(x\in X\). Moreover, \(\psi(\alpha,\beta)\) is the best constant (Theorem 4.1).
