Let \(\mathcal S\) denote the Selberg class of Dirichlet series (i.e., \(L\)-functions; for an extensive account see the review paper of \textit{J. Kaczorowski} and \textit{A. Perelli} [ Number theory in progress. Zakopane, Poland, 1997. Volume 2: Elementary and analytic number theory. Berlin: de Gruyter, 953--992 (1999; Zbl 0929.11028)]. The present authors are interested in the zeros of elements of \(\mathcal S\) with degree \(d=2\), whose classification is not complete yet. If \(d=2\) and the well-defined invariants \(q,\xi\) of \(\mathcal S\) satisfy the conditions that \(\xi \in \mathbb R\) and \( \sqrt{q}\) is irrational, then it is proved that \(F \in \mathcal S\) has infinitely many zeros on the ``critical line'' \(\text{Re}\, s = 1/2\) if the coefficients \(a(n)\) of \(F\) satisfy \[ \sum_{n\leq x}|a(n)|^2 = O(x). \] The main ingredient in the proof is the result of \textit{H. Daboussi} and \textit{H. Delange} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 26, 245--264 (1982; Zbl 0499.10052)] that, for every irrational \(\alpha\), \[ \sum_{n\leq x} f(n)\exp(2\pi in\alpha) = o(x)\qquad(x\to\infty), \] if \(f(n)\) is a multiplicative function satisfying the condition \( \sum\limits_{n\leq x}|f(n)|^2 = O(x).\)
